Congratulations on the bursary, what excellent news. (And on the 211!). Going to have to find a cheap ticket to Alaska of my own. Wow.

Thank you. Yes, the bursary was extremely welcome. Because, as a writer, I simply chase my obsessions, and hope to find an audience later, I’m hard to categorize, or market, within the publishing industry’s structures. Which is understandable, which is fine, it’s simply the consequence of my choices. But it means I do need to find ways of funding my writing that aren’t straightforwardly commercial.

And a bursary like that one is particularly nice, because it is granted by my peers. (The panels comprise other Irish writers who don’t have a personal connection to you.) They read sample work, etc, in order to make their decision. (I sent them the introduction to The Egg and the Rock, from earlier this year.) So it’s great to know that my ideas are appreciated by my peers; that the project is working.
